Introducing our Spanner Crab Tray, a specialised tool designed to catch these prehistoric looking spanner crabs. Spanner crabs, known for their sweet and delicate meat, are a prized catch among seafood enthusiasts. Our Spanner Crab Tray is meticulously crafted to optimise your crabbing endeavours, ensuring a bountiful harvest while respecting local traditions.
The Spanner Crab Tray is pre-strung with 210 x 6 x 1 ¼‘ white mesh that is tailored to the specific needs of catching spanner crabs. To attract the crab an oily bait such as pilchards is placed in a bait holder like Crab’n Gear’s Bait Ezy or Bait Bag in the middle of the tray. When the Spanner crab walks, unusually in a forward and backward motion, across the tray the small spikes that are all over their shell quickly become entangled in the mesh holding them there until the tray is retrieved. It is amazing to see crabs pulled up from often 50 or more meters still hooked onto the thin mesh. The tray’s open design allows for efficient capture and easy retrieval and inspection of your catch, ensuring that undersized or unwanted crabs can be released back into the water, contributing to sustainable crabbing practices.
Spanner crabs are typically found in sandy or muddy substrates along the east coast of Australia between Yeppoon QLD and Nowra NSW in depths of 10 to 100m of water. Spanner crabs are known for their distinctive appearance, with their large, hard shell and elongated legs, making them easily recognisable amidst the catch. They live for about 15 years and do not reach sexual maturity until around 5 years. They spend most of their lives buried under the sand trying to avoid predators and can grow up to 150mm for male and 120mm for female crabs.
While there are some other small fisheries around the world Queensland has the world’s largest Spanner Crab Fishery with over 99% of the harvest coming from commercial fishers. To maintain the fishery in Queensland there is an annual closed season for Spanner crabbing that takes place during their spawning from 1 November to 15 December annually.
In QLD there is a limit of four pots per person, a 10cm minimum size, with the measurement taken from the centre spine to mid carapace base, and a limit of 20 crabs per person. Females spanner crabs can be taken, however all egg bearing crabs are no take and must be returned. QLD has additional rules around spanner crabbing that can be found here
In NSW there is a limit of 1 pot per person, a minimum size of 9.3cm and a limit of 10 crabs per person. NSW has additional rules around spanner crabbing apparatus that can be found here
If the mesh in your spanner tray gets ripped or destroyed you can easily get replacement nets with more information here
